How does this compare with the requirements under the DSD?

Under DSD, there is no obligation to formally classify water bodies on the basis of EQSs?. However, the agencies are expected to use these standards to inform the regulatory permitting regimes, and ensure that discharges of such substances to the water environment do not result in breaches of these EQSs?. In addition, they are expected to design pollution-reduction plans to address any instances where there are currently identified problems. In Scotland, a limited set of chemicals form part of the overall water quality classification systems.

Up to and including 2013, these arrangements will be maintained, unless DSD standards are replaced by EQS for Specific Pollutants. This means that no additional obligations will be undertaken and no such parameter will be included automatically in the GES classification status scheme unless or until a standard has been agreed for use under WFD.
